6mm Riveted Solid Mix: You are fascinated by the very tiny rings? Then this is your ticket to make smooth and dense mail. You get 4kg of loose 6mm round rings and 6mm flat solid rings. It is a 50/50-mix of both types of rings with tiny dome rivets in the right ratio included. Once you connect this to a sheet of mail, it almost behaves like fabric and feels super intriguing to touch.
How do you use these Round Rings? You can use them as they are – or as I like to do -strike the round riveted rings by hammer to make them flat. That creates a really original handmade appearance and will make your mail look even denser. These rings are especially suitable for Roman mail and high-status medieval armor.
What is the quality? Full transparency: This is still what I use myself and I constantly keep my eyes open for the best quality. If you are as picky as me, you will find that about 25% of rings have their rivet holes not perfectly centered and some of the solid rings are cut at the edge. That’s ok because you get the ring pack at a competitive price.
What about historic accuracy? Rings of this size can be found throughout the ages. This matches with Roman mail from Fort Arbeia or Calingwark Loch, but also the Viking age Gjermundbu find from Norway. The late middle ages and renaissance left us with even smaller rings such as Wallace Collection A2 and A7 – likely very prestigious objects at the time. This 6mm rings Riveted Solid mix is perhaps your most practical way to reconstruct that small and dense look within a reasonable amount of time.
You must be wondering about the effect of ring size at this point. Here are my thoughts and calculations on YouTube.
These rings are compatible with our Riveting Tongs.
